Our Story
Craig Lee and Lisa Tyus-Lee met in 1985 while Craig was working in Chicago, IL as a special agent with ATF and Lisa worked in sales and marketing in Columbus, OH. After 3 years of commuter dating between the two cities, Craig returned to Columbus and resumed his work with the Columbus Division of Police. Craig worked as a Sergeant in several different areas of the department until his retirement in 2006.
On Thanksgiving 1993, Craig decided to bake Lisa’s favorite cookie, chocolate chip, from a recipe he found. After a few minor adjustments to the recipe, and to her delight, the original recipe had transformed into something really special. After sharing them with family, friends, and fellow police colleagues, word began to spread of “the cop that makes the amazing cookies”. While baking cookies in his police uniform, Lisa jokingly called Craig “The Cookie Cop” and the rest, as they say, is history.
Fast forward to 2005, while policing a major event in downtown Columbus, OH, Craig was caught in the center of a gang-related skirmish. He sustained injury to his left hip from the stampeding crowd, but continued to work that day unaware of the pain. He continued to do his job over the next year until it became undeniable that the hip would have to be replaced, and soon. It wasn’t until July 2007 that he finally relented and received a total hip replacement. Unfortunately, a major nerve was severed leaving Craig with a pronounced limp and ongoing physical therapy. After the Division of Police deemed Craig to be 72% disabled, he and Lisa came to the conclusion that, even though bittersweet for Craig , his retiring would be a blessing to their family. Not only would he be able to spend more time developing his baking skills and growing the business, more importantly, he would aslo be able to spend more time with his family, a luxury not afforded him over his 24+ years in law enforcement and 20+ years of marriage.
Craig and Lisa have 2 children: Kathryn and Brennan. Their role in the business is to continue to provide their youthful brand of honesty on new products. Lisa & Craig were both athletes in their formative years and the skills and discipline they learned then continue to motivate and inspire them in their adult lives. They are determined to help their kids grow up to recognize the importance of a healthy lifestyle. It was the commitment to them that inspired Craig to create the healthy versions of the original cookies that are enjoyed today!
